Wong Ling Ching admitted she was disappointed after letting a promising position slip away in her China Open debut, as the Malaysian bowed out in the opening round despite pushing South Korea's Sim Yu Jin all the way.
Making her first appearance at the World Tour Super 1000 tournament in Changzhou, Ling Ching looked on course for one of the biggest wins of her career before eventually losing 21-14, 19-21, 19-21.
The Malaysian was in control for much of the match and held commanding leads in both the second and third games, but was unable to convert them as Sim mounted a strong comeback to snatch victory.
Ling Ching admitted the defeat was difficult to accept because she felt the match was within her grasp.
"I had my chances, especially in the second and third games, but I couldn't finish the job," she said after the match. "It's disappointing because I know I let the opportunity slip away."
Despite another first-round exit on the World Tour, the national women's singles player believes there are encouraging signs in her recent performances. She has become increasingly competitive against higher-ranked opponents and feels she is moving in the right direction.
The 24-year-old said the experience gained from competing at the highest level will be valuable as she continues working towards greater consistency.
Although the result was not the one she wanted, Ling Ching's performance showed she has the ability to challenge established players. Her next objective will be turning those competitive displays into victories as she looks to make deeper runs in major tournaments.
