Italian tennis star Lorenzo Musetti saw a potential career-defining victory slip away at the Australian Open, retiring from his quarterfinal against ten-time champion Novak Djokovic due to injury while leading two sets to none.
Musetti, seeded fifth, dominated the opening sets, winning 6-4 and 6-3, before Djokovic claimed the third set 3-1. During the match, Musetti felt escalating pain in his leg, which prevented him from executing forehands and moving freely. After a medical timeout, the discomfort worsened, leaving him no choice but to retire.
“I felt the pain increasing and I could not continue,” Musetti admitted. “There was no way to tape it or do anything to keep playing.” He believes the injury may be a muscle tear, although further medical assessments are pending.
This marks a painful repeat of his encounter with Djokovic at the 2021 Roland Garros, where Musetti also retired while leading by two sets. His record against Djokovic now stands at 1-9, but both matches have highlighted his ability to challenge the world’s elite.
Despite the disappointment, Djokovic moves on to the semifinals, where he will face two-time defending champion Jannik Sinner. Sinner advanced after a 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 win over eighth seed Ben Shelton, setting up a high-stakes clash. Djokovic himself has battled physical issues in Melbourne, receiving treatment for blisters on his right foot earlier in the tournament.
Musetti’s exit underscores the physical demands of professional tennis, where injuries can abruptly end promising runs. His performance, however brief, demonstrated his potential to compete at the highest level and left fans hopeful for a full recovery and continued success this season.
