The Duel with Virgil van Dijk
Noni Madueke has come up against many top-class defenders in the Premier League, but he singled out one as the toughest he has faced. The Arsenal F.C. winger named Virgil van Dijk, captain of Liverpool F.C., as the most challenging opponent due to his combination of size, pace, and defensive awareness.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Madueke explained: "I would probably say Virgil van Dijk. He’s just so big and fast so it’s difficult to get in behind him. I would probably say him, for sure. Playing against players like that is good competition, you want to test yourself against the best, that’s the mindset you have to have going into the game. It’s football at the highest level so it’s definitely fun to test yourself against those type of players."
Why He Chose Arsenal Over Chelsea
The 24-year-old’s £50 million move to Arsenal F.C. from Chelsea F.C. last summer surprised many, especially after he had helped Chelsea win the UEFA Conference League. However, Madueke says the decision was driven by his belief that Arsenal offered a stronger chance of competing for major trophies under Mikel Arteta.
He said: "I just believed Arsenal were going to win trophies so that’s why I moved," Madueke explained. "The England boys helped me a lot, I was already close to them so it was great. The whole club helped me though, everyone in and around the club was helpful. It’s full of good people and people who want to work hard and achieve something. It was easy in that sense."
Supporting Declan Rice for PFA Award
Declan Rice has also made a major impact since joining Arsenal, and Madueke believes his teammate deserves recognition for it. He named Rice as his pick for the PFA Player of the Year after an outstanding season in midfield.
When asked about Rice’s chances, he said: "Yeah, definitely. I hope he wins it. Look at how consistent he’s been this season. Those type of trophies depend on team success as well as individual performances but if we win I’m sure he has a real chance. I’ve known him for a few years now and he’s a top, top person and a top player, he’s got a great vibe about him off the pitch and on the pitch he’s obviously a top player and a leader."
Arsenal’s Push for Silverware
While Madueke hasn’t always been a regular starter under Mikel Arteta, he has still played a useful role in Arsenal’s strong season. The club has reached its first Champions League final in 20 years after beating Atlético Madrid, while also remaining in the Premier League title race. They now turn their attention to maintaining momentum as they prepare to face West Ham in their next league fixture.
