Malaysia’s Uber Cup squad has taken a bold step by promoting teenage pair Low Zi Yu and Noraqilah Maisarah Ramdan, signalling a fresh push towards youth and long-term development in women’s doubles.

Malaysia’s Uber Cup selection has taken a surprising turn with the inclusion of teenage women’s doubles pair Low Zi Yu and Noraqilah Maisarah Ramdan, a move that highlights a clear shift towards youth within the national setup.

The decision by Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) selectors to promote the 16-year-old Zi Yu and 19-year-old Noraqilah over more experienced combinations reflects a strategy focused on long-term potential and recent performances rather than seniority. The duo will be part of the squad competing at the Uber Cup Finals in Horsens, Denmark.

Their selection is not without merit. The pair made headlines earlier this year at the Badminton Asia Team Championships, where they stunned world No. 41 pair Luo Yi and Wang Ting Ge of China in a three-game comeback win. That result showcased their composure under pressure and ability to compete at senior international level.

They also impressed at junior level, finishing as silver medallists at last year’s World Junior Championships. These performances helped fast-track their promotion into the senior national team setup.

Both players admitted the call-up came as a shock, especially given the presence of more established names in the squad. Noraqilah described being surprised by the decision, while Zi Yu expressed readiness to step up and contribute if given the opportunity.

The reshuffle in Malaysia’s women’s doubles lineup has also been influenced by the withdrawal of star shuttler Pearly Tan, which has forced adjustments in pairings and opened the door for new combinations to be tested. With several partnerships still being finalised, the team structure remains flexible heading into the competition.

This uncertainty could work in favour of the younger players, as rotation in the doubles lineup may create chances for them to feature in key matches during the group stage.

While expectations remain measured, the inclusion of Zi Yu and Noraqilah signals a clear message from BAM: Malaysia is willing to invest in youth on the world stage.
