Malaysia bounced back from an early shock defeat to Finland, powering through the remaining matches to secure a Thomas Cup quarter-final berth and set up a decisive clash with Japan.

Malaysia produced a strong response to secure their place in the Thomas Cup quarter-finals after Leong Jun Hao suffered a surprising defeat in the opening singles match against Finland’s lower-ranked opponent. Despite the early setback, the national squad regained control by dominating the remaining ties to seal a 4-1 victory in Horsens, Denmark, confirming their progression into the last eight of the tournament.

4 Key Highlights

  • Malaysia beat Finland 4-1 to reach Thomas Cup quarter-finals
  • Jun Hao suffered an upset loss in the opening singles match
  • Hoh and Zii Jia led Malaysia’s comeback in the singles matches
  • Doubles pairs sealed the overall victory for Malaysia

Jun Hao stunned in opening match loss

World No. 25 Leong Jun Hao endured a disappointing outing, falling in straight games 21-17, 21-15 to Finland’s Joakim Oldorff, ranked 60th in the world, in a 43-minute contest. Having been rested in the opening match against England, Jun Hao appeared off rhythm throughout, committing a series of unforced errors that allowed his opponent to take control of the match.

Strong response from singles players

Malaysia quickly responded through Justin Hoh, who restored parity with a convincing 21-14, 21-12 win over Finland’s Kalle Koljonen in just 39 minutes. His composed performance helped settle the team after the early setback and shifted momentum back in Malaysia’s favour.

Lee Zii Jia then put Malaysia ahead with a solid straight-games victory, defeating Ananda Galvani Daniswara 21-19, 21-10 in 35 minutes. The world No. 82 showed his experience and control to overcome his lower-ranked opponent and move Malaysia one step closer to sealing the tie.

Doubles seal the comeback

Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani ensured the tie was wrapped up, beating Eliel Melleri and Niilo Nyqvist 21-12, 21-15 in 23 minutes. Scratch pair Soh Wooi Yik and Tee Kai Wun also completed a comfortable win in the final match, defeating Ananda Galvani and Alvar Melleri 21-7, 21-14.

Japan clash awaits as Malaysia target Group B top spot

The national team, five-time Thomas Cup champions with their last title in 1992, will be looking to carry their momentum forward into the knockout stage.
