Wong Tien Ci and Lim Chiew Sien were unable to make the most of their late entry into the World Championships, suffering a straight-games defeat to Indonesia’s Rehan Naufal Kusharjanto and Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja in New Delhi.

Malaysia’s mixed doubles hopes suffered an early setback at the Badminton World Championships after Wong Tien Ci and Lim Chiew Sien were comfortably beaten by Indonesia’s Rehan Naufal Kusharjanto and Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja in the opening round.

The Malaysian pair received a late opportunity to compete in New Delhi after another combination withdrew from the tournament, but their unexpected entry ended after just 33 minutes.

Facing the more experienced Indonesian duo, Wong and Lim struggled to establish their rhythm from the start. They stayed within reach during the opening game but were eventually beaten 21-16 as Kusharjanto and Widjaja took control of the key points.

The second game proved far more one-sided. The Indonesians quickly opened up a sizeable lead and never allowed their Malaysian opponents back into the contest, closing out a dominant 21-3 victory.

The defeat ended Wong and Lim’s World Championships campaign before they could make the most of their unexpected opportunity, while highlighting the gap they still need to close against established international combinations.

Although the result will be disappointing, their late inclusion itself represents valuable experience for the Malaysian pair. Competing at a major championship gives them an opportunity to understand the intensity and demands of the biggest stage, something that could benefit their development going forward.

For Malaysia, attention now turns to the rest of the squad as the country's remaining shuttlers continue their campaigns in New Delhi.

With the mixed doubles pair already eliminated, the pressure will be on the remaining Malaysian representatives to deliver stronger results and keep the country's hopes of a deep World Championships run alive.
