The Red Devils' Midfield Reinforcement Mission
Manchester United's midfield could see major changes this summer. With veteran Casemiro likely to leave Old Trafford on a free transfer, the club is actively exploring options to strengthen its engine room. Sandro Tonali has emerged as a prime target, a player renowned for his tenacity and polished passing.
Beyond Tonali, other promising midfielders such as Nottingham Forest's Elliott Anderson and Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton are reportedly under consideration. Yet the appeal of a proven Premier League performer like Tonali continues to attract attention.
Tonali Expected to Spark Another Summer Saga
Tonali was the subject of widespread speculation at the close of the winter transfer window, with his future at St James’ Park in doubt. Title-chasing Arsenal were linked with a move after Mikel Arteta lost Mikel Merino to injury, although reports of an approach from Emirates Stadium were quickly downplayed.
Still, exit talk from the North East has persisted, and Tonali is expected to feature in another high-profile transfer saga when the summer window opens.
A Battle for the Italian Maestro's Signature
Interest in Tonali is far from limited to Manchester United. Juventus are said to have “concrete interest” in the former AC Milan star, eyeing a return to his homeland. However, the Red Devils are reportedly prepared to offer him an extended stay in English football.
Manchester City have also reportedly monitored Tonali, remaining keen on proven Premier League performers. If Newcastle were to entertain a sale, they would likely make a huge profit on a player acquired for £55m ($75m) in 2023.
Tonali is tied to a contract through 2029, keeping his valuation high. Newcastle have seen players like Declan Rice, Enzo Fernandez, and Moises Caicedo move for nine-figure sums, and a similar fee is expected to be required to lure Tonali away from Tyneside.
Howe Confident Tonali is Happy at St James’ Park
Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has insisted that Tonali is settled at the club. Speaking after the winter window, Howe said: “There was no intention from our side to lose Sandro at all. He is very happy here, loves playing for Newcastle, and loves the city. Sandro is absolutely fine. I had discussions with him yesterday. His focus is on the here and now and with us. There is no issue with Sandro himself. He is happy and committed.”
Asked if a situation like the Alexander Isak saga could repeat, Howe added: “I don't think so, but lots of things happen without my knowledge. As far as I am aware, we have an outstanding footballer and outstanding person, and he has a great relationship with me and his teammates, seems really happy in himself, and that would be a surprise to me. Our best players will always be attracting glances from other clubs, that is just the reality of football. We want to keep the group together, keep being progressive, and, of course, Sandro plays a part in that. All encompassed, I don't see an issue, but I am not in control of everything.”
