Marc Marquez turned a potentially disastrous start into a statement victory at the Aragon Grand Prix, recovering from an early mistake to dominate the race and breathe new life into his MotoGP championship campaign.
Starting second on the grid, Marquez made an excellent launch and immediately took the lead from pole-sitter Marco Bezzecchi at Turn 1. His advantage, however, lasted only a few corners.
At Turn 2, his Ducati bottomed out heavily and both Bezzecchi and Jorge Martin swept past. Marquez later admitted that he had forgotten to disengage the rear ride-height device after the warm-up lap, leaving the bike running unusually low through the opening section of the circuit.
“It was a scary moment,” Marquez said, explaining that the mistake made the Ducati “super low” and seriously affected its handling and performance through the first sector.
Bezzecchi witnessed the incident from close range and said Marquez appeared to slow dramatically at Turn 2, with sparks coming from the Ducati. The situation was serious enough that a collision was narrowly avoided.
For most riders, such a mistake could have ended any hopes of victory. Marquez, however, quickly regrouped and began working his way back into contention.
The six-time MotoGP world champion first reclaimed his position from Martin before getting back ahead of Bezzecchi. Once back at the front, he had to deal with strong pressure from Pedro Acosta, who stayed close enough to prevent Marquez from relaxing during the middle stages.
Marquez eventually found another level of pace and pulled clear to secure the victory, completing a perfect Aragon weekend after also winning Saturday’s Sprint.
The result could prove hugely significant in the championship. Following a difficult round at Silverstone, Marquez has moved from fourth to second in the standings and now sits just 19 points behind Martin.
His victory was particularly important given the strength of his rivals at Aragon. Bezzecchi, Martin and Acosta all showed competitive pace throughout the weekend, while other riders such as Ai Ogura also demonstrated the ability to challenge near the front.
Marquez knew Aragon was a circuit where he needed to maximize his points haul. With eight previous MotoGP victories at the venue, the Ducati rider has long enjoyed a strong record at MotorLand Aragon, making the weekend an important opportunity in his championship comeback.
Rather than simply taking advantage of a favourable circuit, however, Marquez had to overcome his own mistake before earning the win.
The combination of speed, recovery and composure under pressure once again highlighted why he remains one of MotoGP’s most dangerous championship contenders.
After once trailing the championship by more than 100 points, Marquez is now only 19 points away from Martin. With the title fight tightening rapidly, his Aragon comeback may prove to be one of the defining moments of the season.
