Marco Bezzecchi has undergone a routine procedure to treat the wound on his left knee as he continues his recovery from injuries sustained during the German MotoGP weekend.
The Aprilia rider crashed heavily during the Sachsenring qualifying session earlier this month, suffering a displaced fracture to his left collarbone that required surgery. He also sustained a significant wound to his left knee, which has now been cleaned in a follow-up procedure.
In a statement, Aprilia confirmed the operation was successful and that Bezzecchi has already returned home to continue his rehabilitation ahead of the British Grand Prix at Silverstone on Aug 7-9.
The injury came at the worst possible time for the Italian, who had been among the leading title contenders earlier this season before a difficult run of results.
Since winning the Italian Grand Prix at Mugello in May, Bezzecchi has failed to finish a Sunday race. Over the last four rounds, he has collected just 13 points, all of them from Sprint races, after crashes and setbacks derailed his championship challenge.
His recent struggles have seen him slip to fourth in the championship standings, 22 points behind Aprilia team-mate Jorge Martin. He also now trails Marc Marquez by four points after previously holding a sizeable advantage over the Ducati rider.
With the summer break providing valuable recovery time, Aprilia remains optimistic that Bezzecchi will be back on the grid for Silverstone, where he claimed his maiden victory for the manufacturer last season.
