Inter Miami has officially kicked off training for the 2026 MLS season, and the rumor mill is already buzzing with transfer speculation. Reports suggest the club is nearing a deal for CF Monterrey forward Germán Berterame, with negotiations reportedly in their final stages. Amidst this potential acquisition, coach Javier Mascherano was directly asked about how Berterame's arrival might affect Luis Suárez's role within the squad. Mascherano was unequivocal in his support for the Uruguayan star. "Luis is an important player for the club, and he will continue to be," Mascherano affirmed. "When we start preseason, everyone starts from zero. We’ll evaluate the level of every player and put the most competitive team possible on the field." While not directly confirming the Berterame transfer, Mascherano added, "We want a competitive team. What I can say is that some players have already arrived, and for sure others will arrive," hinting at further squad enhancements.
Berterame is coming off a stellar 2025 campaign with Monterrey, where he netted an impressive 27 goals and contributed five assists across 47 appearances. His high-energy play, aggressive pressing, and constant offensive movement are qualities that would seamlessly complement Lionel Messi in Miami's attacking lineup.
The week also saw Inter Miami's newest addition, Facundo Mura, make his first media appearance. The former Racing Club defender couldn't hide his enthusiasm about joining the Herons. "Being [Lionel Messi's] teammate is a dream come true. For every Argentine, every South American, every footballer, it should be like that," Mura expressed. "With Leo, Suárez, and [Rodrigo] De Paul, there’s an important group here. We’re going to fight for our objectives, and I’m very happy and excited for what’s coming."
Looking ahead, Inter Miami, spearheaded by Lionel Messi — who will be playing at Alejandro Villanueva Stadium for the first time — is set to arrive in Lima on January 23. They will face Alianza Lima the following day. This match will be a highlight of La Noche Blanquiazul, also marking the commencement of celebrations for Alianza Lima’s 125th anniversary.
