Four-time Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen has thrown his support behind the proposed 2027 engine regulation changes, describing the planned shift toward greater internal combustion engine power as a major positive for the future of the sport.
Speaking after returning to the Formula 1 paddock in Montreal, the Red Bull Racing driver said the latest direction discussed by the FIA was moving Formula 1 closer to what drivers had been asking for.
Under the proposed revisions, Formula 1’s future power units would operate with a 60 percent internal combustion and 40 percent electric power split. The adjustment marks a change from earlier concepts that placed heavier emphasis on electric energy.
Verstappen has previously voiced concerns about the original plans for the 2027 engines, warning that the balance risked making the cars less enjoyable to drive and less exciting for fans. The Dutchman now believes the updated proposal is a step in the right direction.
He explained that Formula 1 needs to maintain a strong overall product, adding that the latest discussions could help preserve the identity and spectacle of the championship.
The changes may also play an important role in Verstappen’s own future in the sport. While he stopped short of making any long-term commitments, he admitted the revised engine direction improves his outlook on Formula 1’s future.
Verstappen also praised Formula 1 officials for listening more closely to driver feedback during the ongoing discussions. According to him, several meetings have taken place between drivers, the FIA, and Formula One Management in recent months as the sport evaluates the next era of regulations.
Despite the agreement in principle, technical discussions are still ongoing regarding how the new balance will be achieved. Reports suggest possible adjustments could include changes to fuel flow and a reduction in electric output.
The debate remains politically sensitive, with manufacturers continuing to push for solutions that best suit their own engine projects. However, Verstappen stressed that broader sporting interests should remain the priority as Formula 1 finalizes its plans for 2027.
The proposed changes are expected to form a key part of Formula 1’s next regulatory cycle, with officials aiming to strike a balance between sustainability, performance, and entertainment value.
