McLaren F1 Team has confirmed it will bring a major upgrade package to this weekend’s Canadian Grand Prix, continuing an aggressive development push aimed at strengthening its title challenge.
The reigning world champions showed strong pace after introducing a large upgrade package to the MCL40 ahead of the Miami Grand Prix, where drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri both secured podium finishes. However, the race was won by championship leader Kimi Antonelli, who finished with a three-second margin.
Team principal Andrea Stella said the upgrade plan had always been scheduled across multiple races, with Miami marking the first phase and Montreal continuing the development rollout. However, the scale of the second update has reportedly surprised some within the paddock.
The Canadian Grand Prix is also expected to feature fresh upgrades from rivals, with Mercedes confirming its own new package at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. This has set up a highly competitive weekend as teams attempt to gain early-season performance advantages.
McLaren stated that the Montreal update includes new components across several key areas of the car, including the floor, chassis, front and rear wings, bodywork, halo, and roll hoop.
With multiple top teams introducing upgrades at the same event, the competitive order in Formula One could see further shifts as the championship battle develops.
