After winning the ATP 500 in Dubai, his travel plans were derailed by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. Airspace closures forced him and more than three dozen other players to travel overland from Dubai to Oman before catching a flight to California. Despite the unexpected detour, Medvedev performed impressively at the BNP Paribas Open, defeating top players including fan-favorite Carlos Alcaraz in the semifinals before finishing as runner-up.
Medvedev’s challenges did not end there. En route to Miami from Palm Springs, his luggage and his team’s gear went missing, creating a logistical nightmare just days before the tournament. He took to X (formerly Twitter) to appeal directly to United Airlines, joking about being treated the same as any ordinary traveler despite his superstar status. Fortunately, his equipment was recovered, allowing him to refocus on the tournament ahead.
Despite these off-court setbacks, Medvedev has had a stellar start to 2026, compiling an 18-4 match record that far surpasses his performance at this point last year. With his travel drama behind him, Medvedev is poised to make a strong impression at the Miami Open, combining mental resilience with top-level tennis form.
