The panel highlighted “his dazzling talent, exceptional sporting career, and his remarkable and ongoing charitable work promoting access to education and health care for underprivileged children.” The jury, which included AS editorial director José Félix Díaz and was chaired by Paralympic legend Teresa Perales, also praised Messi’s “consistency, humility and commitment to the collective spirit of the game.”
Barcelona Lead Tributes to Their Greatest Icon
Former club Barcelona were among the first to celebrate the achievement of their legendary ex-captain. Messi spent the majority of his career at Camp Nou, rising through La Masia to spearhead the club’s most dominant era.
During his time in Catalonia, he won four UEFA Champions League titles, 10 La Liga crowns, and seven Copa del Rey trophies, while also securing eight Ballon d’Or awards. His record-breaking goal tally and influence have become inseparable from the club’s modern identity.
