Malaysia experienced both highs and lows on Wednesday at the Badminton Asia Championships in Ningbo, China, where defending men’s doubles champions Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik made a strong start, while singles hopeful Leong Jun Hao suffered an early exit.
In the men’s doubles opening round at the Ningbo Olympic Sports Centre, world No. 2 Aaron‑Wooi Yik produced a commanding 21‑15, 21‑15 victory over Taiwan’s Chiu Hsiang‑chieh and Wang Chi‑lin. The second seeds dispatched their opponents in just 38 minutes to advance comfortably into the second round.
Aaron and Wooi Yik’s next challenge will be either Hong Kong’s Law Cheuk Him and Yeung Shing Choi or China’s Hu Keyuan and Lin Xiangyi, setting up a promising path as they pursue a repeat Asian title.
The men’s singles draw, however, brought disappointment for Malaysia. Leong Jun Hao was beaten in straight games by fourth seed Jonatan Christie, suffering a 13‑21, 8‑21 loss in 36 minutes. This marked Jun Hao’s second straight defeat to the Indonesian star, following a loss earlier in the year at the Malaysian Open.
Malaysia’s mixed fortunes reflect the depth of the national squad as the tournament progresses. With top doubles players advancing and challenging matchups ahead, the team will look to build on strong performances and rebound from setbacks as competition heats up in Ningbo.
