MLS Hot Seat: Coaches Facing the Axe Early in the Season

Two MLS clubs have fired their coaches less than two months into the season, and there is plenty of reason to believe that further managers could leave in the coming weeks.

The MLS coaching carousel is already spinning wildly, and with two managers already out, the pressure cooker is dialed up for several others. While some face justifiable criticism, others are battling systemic issues that run deeper than tactics alone.

Key Points: MLS Coaching Hot Seats

  • Bradley Carnell (Philadelphia Union): Facing intense scrutiny amidst off-field scandals and a dire start to the season.
  • Raphael Wicky (Sporting KC): Struggling to forge an identity with a weak squad despite promising pre-season vibes.
  • Yoann Damet (St. Louis CITY): A solid defense overshadowed by a catastrophic attacking drought.
  • Nico Estevez (Austin FC): Currently in a rough patch but likely safe due to past overperformance and returning talent.
  • Greg Vanney (LA Galaxy): Needs to unite new signings and navigate Riqui Puig's potential long-term absence.

Philadelphia Union's Meltdown: Carnell on the Brink?

The situation at Philadelphia Union is nothing short of a crisis. From top to bottom, the club appears to be in disarray, plagued by off-field scandals and an active MLS investigation that has overshadowed any on-pitch aspirations. Losing key players without adequate replacements has left the squad feeling depleted.

Coach Bradley Carnell bears some responsibility, and his tenure has certainly not steadied the ship. With only one league win and six losses, the Union are languishing. Their attacking output is among the worst in the league. A recent win over Montreal offered a temporary reprieve, but the axe feels perpetually poised over Carnell’s head.

Sporting KC's Identity Crisis: Wicky Under Scrutiny

Optimism surrounded Sporting KC at the season's outset, particularly with the arrival of David Lee to bolster soccer operations. Coach Raphael Wicky, despite limited MLS experience, arrived with a respectable coaching background. The promise was a well-structured side with a clear identity.

However, that promise has evaporated. Sporting KC looks rudderless, struggling to find any consistent rhythm. While the squad itself is notably weak and lacks depth, Wicky has failed to instill a distinctive playing style or overcome the team's glaring deficiencies. A change might be the only way forward to define this project.

St. Louis CITY's Offensive Drought: Can Damet Find a Spark?

For Yoann Damet at St. Louis CITY, the narrative is one of stark contrasts. Defensively, the team has been surprisingly resilient, conceding just nine goals in seven games against a tough schedule including San Diego, LAFC, and Seattle. This record is certainly respectable.

The real problem lies at the other end of the pitch. St. Louis has managed a paltry six goals all season, with half of those coming in a single match. A reliable striker is desperately needed. Marcel Hartel offers creativity, but he’s not a consistent goalscorer, and Simon Becher has yet to convince. Damet needs to conjure an attacking solution quickly.

Austin FC's Rough Patch: Estevez Still Safe (For Now)

Labeling Nico Estevez as 'on the hot seat' might be premature. Last year, Austin FC defied expectations, reaching a respectable playoff position even after their star striker suffered a season-ending injury. That performance built significant credit for Estevez.

Despite a current five-game winless streak and a struggle for offensive ideas, there's hope on the horizon. Key players are returning from injury, which could reinvigorate the squad. While his seat might be warming, Estevez isn't facing immediate danger thanks to his prior success and the impending return of vital talent.

LA Galaxy's Vanney: On the Fringe, Needing Cohesion

Greg Vanney of LA Galaxy has also seen a recent reprieve, notably a 2-1 victory over Austin. Yet, the Galaxy largely remain a middling side. The shadow of Riqui Puig’s injury looms large, with concerns about his long-term availability after multiple knee surgeries. The team may need to adapt to life without their midfield maestro.

To his credit, Vanney has never used injuries as an excuse. The front office provided him with significant new talent this offseason, but these signings have yet to fully gel and consistently perform. Vanney's job security hinges on the Galaxy maintaining a playoff contention status. A sustained poor run, however, would undoubtedly lead to serious questions.
