LCR Honda have officially confirmed that Cal Crutchlow will return to MotoGP action at this weekend’s Italian Grand Prix in Mugello, stepping in for the injured Johann Zarco.
According to Motorsport, Crutchlow took part in Wednesday’s private MotoGP test at Misano alongside the sport’s five manufacturers to evaluate both his physical condition and whether a competitive return was realistically possible. The decision was officially announced by LCR on Thursday morning.

Back On The MotoGP Grid
The Mugello outing will mark Crutchlow’s first appearance on a MotoGP grid in almost three years. The 40-year-old Brit last raced at the 2023 Japanese Grand Prix, where he competed as a Yamaha wildcard while also serving as the brand’s test rider.
Despite being away from racing for an extended period, Zarco’s injury situation forced LCR to explore experienced replacement options. The French rider is still awaiting surgery after suffering serious injuries in a heavy crash in Barcelona.
That situation ultimately opened the door for one of LCR’s most successful former riders to make an unexpected comeback. During his previous stint with Lucio Cecchinello’s squad, Crutchlow secured three MotoGP victories in the team’s colours.
Why Honda Chose Crutchlow
Honda currently has Takaaki Nakagami and Aleix Espargaro available as its primary test riders and stand-in options for injured racers. However, Espargaro is unavailable after crashing during a private test session at Sepang in Malaysia roughly a month ago.
Although Nakagami appeared to be the more straightforward option, several factors reportedly influenced Cecchinello’s decision to bring Crutchlow back instead.
Firstly, Honda is keen to avoid exposing Nakagami to unnecessary injury risks, as the Japanese rider is heavily involved in developing the manufacturer’s future MotoGP prototype for the upcoming 850cc regulation era.
At the same time, the Tokyo-born rider — who stepped away from full-time competition in 2024 — reportedly has little interest in returning to the intense demands of full grand prix weekends.
A Surprise Return After Injury Struggles
Crutchlow officially retired from full-time MotoGP racing in 2020 after spending six seasons as one of LCR Honda’s leading riders under a factory-backed contract. He later joined Yamaha as a test rider in 2021 and continued making substitute appearances through to 2023.
However, ongoing complications from a hand injury eventually forced him away from the paddock altogether — until Cecchinello contacted him just days ago with an opportunity few expected to see happen again.
