The 2026 MotoGP season unofficially begins this week with the Sepang shakedown test. Yamaha’s factory riders join select test and rookie riders as teams begin evaluating new machines ahead of the official pre‑season test.

The MotoGP off‑season is officially over as teams prepare for the Sepang shakedown test this week, the first on‑track action of the 2026 season.

The shakedown runs from January 29 to 31 at the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia. This early test is a key opportunity for manufacturers to assess their new bikes, components, aerodynamics, and engine updates in real conditions.

Unlike the official pre‑season test in early February, the shakedown is not focused on lap times. Instead, engineers and riders use the sessions to identify early issues and collect data that will inform development ahead of the full MotoGP field’s arrival.

A notable feature of the shakedown is its limited rider list. Only test riders, rookies, and full‑time riders from manufacturers in certain concession categories are permitted to participate. This year, Yamaha is the only factory team in that group, allowing its full‑time riders to take part.

Yamaha will field both of its factory riders, Fabio Quartararo and Alex Rins, providing the team with extra feedback on their 2026 machine before the main testing period. Other teams will rely on their top test riders to complete programmes throughout the three days.

The Sepang shakedown sessions run daily from 10:00 to 18:00 Malaysian time, which translates to late night and early morning viewing for European audiences. There will be no official live television broadcast or live timing service. However, teams and MotoGP will release regular updates, and GOD55 Sports will offer daily summaries, top times, and key developments from the test.

As the winter break ends, the Sepang shakedown offers the first glimpse of how the 2026 machines are shaping up and sets the tone for what promises to be another competitive season.
