Lorenzo Musetti continued his return to form with a straight-sets victory over 17-year-old Moise Kouame at the Grand Prix Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, while Stan Wawrinka and Tommy Paul also secured important wins.

Lorenzo Musetti continued his encouraging run at the Grand Prix Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes in Lyon, overcoming French teenager Moise Kouame 6-4, 6-4 to reach the quarter-finals.

The world No. 26 had to remain composed against the 17-year-old, who made an aggressive start in front of his home crowd and moved 3-1 ahead in the opening set. Musetti gradually took control, using his experience to recover the deficit and claim the first set before maintaining his advantage in the second.

The Italian completed the victory in one hour and 50 minutes, recording 26 winners along the way and securing his sixth quarter-final appearance of the season.

Musetti's progress is particularly encouraging after an injury-disrupted 2026 campaign and early exits at the US Open and Shanghai Masters. His straight-sets victories over compatriot Matteo Arnaldi and Kouame suggest he is beginning to regain his rhythm ahead of the final stretch of the season.

The Italian was also familiar with his young opponent, having practised with Kouame in Monte-Carlo earlier this year.

“We practised together in Monte-Carlo this year, so I knew his potential. I knew today was going to be a tough match,” Musetti said.

He will next face either Valentin Vacherot or Luca Van Assche for a place in the semi-finals.

Although Kouame was unable to secure the victory, his performance underlined his potential as one of France's promising young players. He is also competing for a place at the Next Gen ATP Finals in Reggio Calabria, alongside compatriot Felix Balshaw.

Kouame and Balshaw entered the tournament ranked eighth and ninth respectively in the PIF ATP Live Race to the Next Gen ATP Finals. Balshaw's campaign ended with a 6-4, 6-4 defeat to French left-hander Corentin Moutet.

Moutet secured consecutive tour-level victories for only the second time this season and will face fourth seed Tommy Paul in the quarter-finals.

Meanwhile, three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka produced one of the day's most dramatic performances, defeating Martin Landaluce 6-3, 6-7(2), 7-6(5) in the opening round.

The Swiss veteran needed five match points to close out the contest, eventually prevailing in a deciding-set tie-break to keep his farewell campaign going. Wawrinka is set to retire after competing at his home tournament in Basel next week, making every remaining appearance an opportunity to extend his final season.

His next challenge in Lyon will be against top seed Flavio Cobolli.

Paul also advanced after overcoming Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi 6-4, 6-7(4), 6-3 in a hard-fought encounter. The victory was important for the American's bid to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin.

Paul stood 12th in the PIF ATP Live Race to Turin, holding a 105-point advantage over compatriot Taylor Fritz, who was scheduled to begin his Lyon campaign against Pierre-Hugues Herbert.

With Musetti building momentum, Wawrinka fighting to prolong his farewell and Paul chasing a place among the season's elite, the Lyon tournament continued to deliver compelling storylines as the quarter-finals approached.
