The NBA and NBPA have agreed that both players are qualified for awards under the CBA's extraordinary circumstances provision.

NBA Awards BOMBSHELL: Cunningham & Dončić In, Edwards Left Out!

The NBA’s key rulings on award eligibility for the 2025-26 season have sparked major attention, confirming that Cade Cunningham and Luka Dončić will remain in contention for league honors. However, the decision also delivers a setback for Anthony Edwards, whose challenge was rejected, ruling him out of annual awards consideration.

Key Decisions on Awards Eligibility

  • Cade Cunningham (Detroit Pistons) is eligible despite missing 12 games due to a collapsed lung.
  • Luka Dončić (Los Angeles Lakers) is eligible after missing 2 games for the birth of his daughter.
  • Both players qualified under the CBA's “extraordinary circumstances” provision.
  • Anthony Edwards (Minnesota Timberwolves) is NOT eligible, as his appeal was denied by an independent arbitrator.

Star Power Preserved: Cunningham & Dončić Cleared

In a notable ruling on player eligibility, the NBA and National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) confirmed that both Cade Cunningham and Luka Dončić meet the requirements for 2025-26 NBA annual awards, despite not reaching the standard games threshold.

Under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, players must typically meet a minimum games requirement, but exceptions can be made under “extraordinary circumstances.” Both Cunningham and Dončić were granted eligibility under this provision, with their absences deemed justified.

Cunningham missed 12 games after being diagnosed with a collapsed lung on March 17, while Dončić was sidelined for two games to attend the birth of his daughter in Slovenia. After reviewing the full context of both cases, the NBA and NBPA agreed they should remain award-eligible.

Edwards’ Appeal Rejected

In contrast, Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards, who played 60 qualified games, attempted to secure eligibility through an extraordinary circumstances appeal under the CBA.

However, his case was reviewed by an independent arbitrator and ultimately denied, meaning he falls short of the threshold and will not be eligible for any annual awards this season.

What This Means

The rulings highlight how the NBA is applying flexibility within its rules while still maintaining strict standards. While Cunningham and Dončić benefit from contextual exemptions, Edwards becomes the notable exclusion in a decision that could impact end-of-season award races.
