MIAMI — Norman Powell’s unique physique and adaptability have helped him become a key player for the Miami Heat. Bowlegged to the extreme, Powell’s wide stance has been credited with preventing knee injuries and giving him an edge on step-back jumpers, a move he perfected from Jrue Holiday.
Powell is in the midst of his second consecutive career-best scoring season, averaging 23.7 points and showing unprecedented efficiency. After Paul George left the Clippers in 2024, Powell learned to navigate off-ball screens, running over 28 per 100 possessions and boosting his production.
Joining the Heat, he adapted once more under Spoelstra’s guidance. The new offense emphasizes quick decisions, drives, perimeter swings, and cutting, requiring Powell to read defenders’ footwork before receiving passes. His 41 percent 3-point shooting and precise timing have made him a one-on-one threat while maintaining off-ball versatility.
“He has that chip on his shoulder and willingness to play a role of who he used to be but also an ambition to try to do more and be more,” Spoelstra said.
Powell faces uncertainty with his contract extension approaching this summer, but whatever the outcome, he’s proven he can adjust to new teams, systems, and responsibilities while maintaining elite production.
