Novak Djokovic has once again demonstrated why he is known as the King of Melbourne Park. The 38-year-old battled through a punishing five-set marathon against rising Italian star Jannik Sinner to reach the Australian Open final, breaking a five-match losing streak against the 22-year-old.
In a four-hour-plus clash at Rod Laver Arena, Djokovic overcame a tough challenge, winning 3-6, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. The victory marked not only a return to form but also a psychological breakthrough against Sinner, who had previously bested him in key Grand Slam matches.
"I would not call it my finest ever, but definitely the finest in the last couple of years," Djokovic said after the match. "Against Sinner, who has been playing the best tennis of his life, it does not get better than this."
Djokovic now stands one step from a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam singles title, which would surpass Australian legend Margaret Court. After a challenging 2024 season with semifinal exits at all four majors, this Australian Open run represents a determined return to the top of the sport.
World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz is waiting in the final after surviving his own epic five-set battle against Alexander Zverev, winning 6-4, 7-6 (5), 6-7 (3), 6-7 (4), 7-5. Djokovic and Alcaraz are set for a rematch of past blockbuster encounters, including the 2024 Wimbledon final.
"I play to reach Grand Slam finals," Djokovic said. "For me, this win almost feels like winning a Grand Slam."
Even with foot blisters affecting his movement, Djokovic showcased legendary resilience. Sinner delivered a powerful performance, firing 26 aces and winning 80 percent of his first-serve points. But Djokovic’s renowned return game and mental strength carried him through critical moments, including a key hold at 4-3 in the final set that prevented Sinner from breaking.
This victory adds to Djokovic’s remarkable record in long Australian Open matches. He has now won 17 of his last 18 four- and five-set matches in Melbourne, reinforcing his status as the undisputed king of endurance on this court.
