MotoGP's European leg has reshaped the 2026 championship battle, with Ai Ogura and Marc Marquez emerging as the two standout riders after eight rounds across the continent.
While championship leader Jorge Martin remains on top of the standings, it is Ogura's consistency and Marquez's late surge that have stolen the spotlight heading into the second half of the season.
Ogura has enjoyed a breakthrough campaign in just his second MotoGP season. Since the championship arrived at Jerez in April, the Trackhouse Aprilia rider has collected 157 points across eight European rounds, the highest tally of any rider during that period. His average of nearly 20 points per race weekend has lifted him to second in the championship, just 14 points behind Martin.
A major factor behind Ogura's rise has been his improvement in qualifying. After struggling over a single lap earlier in his MotoGP career, the Japanese rider has become a regular front row contender, giving him stronger opportunities to fight for podiums and victories.
Marquez, meanwhile, has produced one of the strongest recoveries of the season.
The Ducati rider missed the French Grand Prix on Sunday and the entire Barcelona round after undergoing surgery, yet still scored 145 points during the European stretch, second only to Ogura.
His campaign gathered momentum at Mugello, where he rediscovered his best form. Since then, Marquez has claimed three wins from the last four Grands Prix and accumulated 119 points, outperforming every other rider over that period and reigniting his title challenge.

Behind the leading duo, Fabio Di Giannantonio has quietly established himself as one of the championship's most consistent performers. The Italian sits among the top European points scorers after a steady run of results that included victory at the Catalan Grand Prix.
Championship leader Martin has continued to deliver strong performances but has also faced setbacks during the European rounds. Fluctuating form and fitness concerns following the Barcelona weekend have prevented him from extending his advantage.
Francesco Bagnaia has also endured an inconsistent run, with technical issues limiting his ability to challenge consistently at the front. Raul Fernandez has similarly struggled after illness disrupted parts of his campaign.
Marco Bezzecchi's season has taken the opposite direction. After winning at Mugello, the Aprilia rider has failed to score in each of the last four Sunday races, significantly hurting his championship hopes despite collecting points in Sprint races.
The battle between manufacturers has also tightened throughout Europe.
Aprilia and Ducati have traded victories depending on the characteristics of each circuit, with neither factory able to establish clear dominance. The close competition has added another layer of intrigue to an already unpredictable championship.
Four more European rounds remain before MotoGP heads to the Asia-Pacific flyaway races later this season. With Martin holding only a narrow lead and both Ogura and Marquez carrying strong momentum, the championship appears set for an intense battle over the final stages of the campaign.
