Speaking to Metro, Paul Parker delivered a blunt critique of Manchester United’s defensive structure. Despite Harry Maguire’s recent upturn in form, Parker argued the club cannot truly progress with him as a central figure. The 33-year-old England international has signed a new deal keeping him at Old Trafford until 2027, with an option for an additional year.
Although Maguire has been rewarded for his performances since Michael Carrick took charge, Parker remains unconvinced about his long-term role, urging the club to recruit quicker and more dynamic defenders if they are serious about rebuilding into title contenders.
Questions Over Leadership and Impact
Maguire’s role this season has fluctuated significantly. Under former manager Ruben Amorim, he was largely sidelined and limited to brief appearances before a thigh injury kept him out for nine straight Premier League matches. However, since Carrick’s arrival, he has enjoyed a resurgence, returning to the starting XI in mid-January and featuring regularly, aside from suspensions.
Even with that consistency, Parker questioned his leadership qualities. Reflecting on Maguire’s partnership with Ayden Heaven, he said: "He is getting more games, but he’s playing with Harry Maguire, and he’s not a leader on the pitch. He’s earned his contract, I think, in certain ways, because he’s done okay. But if you want to move forward, you don’t move forward with Harry Maguire. So you go out and you get another centre half."
Backing Youth Over Experience
Parker also praised young defender Ayden Heaven, suggesting he should have been given opportunities much earlier in Carrick’s tenure. The teenager has impressed after stepping in due to Matthijs de Ligt’s injury and Lisandro Martínez’s suspension.
Favoring youth over experience, Parker added: "He [Heaven] should have been given an opportunity earlier in Carrick’s reign. I think he’s doing his bit now, but he’s come in and he’s done well. Sometimes he’s a bit rash, but you’ve got to remember how young he is and he’s trying too hard sometimes. You’ve got Martinez and you’ve got Yoro there as well, but you don’t need an older statesman who’s been there. You don’t move forward with Harry Maguire in your team, as far as I’m concerned."
