A Fiery Return to the Court
Malaysia's dynamic women's doubles duo, Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah, made a thrilling comeback at the Singapore Open on Wednesday. Facing Taiwan's Hu Ling Fang-Jheng Yu Chieh, the world No. 2 pair fought tooth and nail, ultimately securing a 20-22, 21-16, 21-15 victory.
The intense 51-minute contest marked Pearly Tan's highly anticipated return to competitive action after a significant injury break. Her relief was palpable, expressing joy at completing the match safely and rejoining her partner on the global stage.
Overcoming the Injury Hurdle
Pearly Tan had been sidelined for two months following a debilitating back injury sustained at the Asia Championships in April. This crucial layoff forced the pair to miss major tournaments, including the Uber Cup, Thailand Open, and the Malaysia Masters.
Her performance in Singapore was a testament to her resilience and dedication, silencing any doubts about her readiness to compete at the elite level. The world championships runners-up are clearly eager to regain their formidable rhythm.
Eyeing Higher Standards: Post-Match Reflections
Despite the victory, both Pearly and Thinaah offered a refreshingly honest assessment of their performance. They acknowledged that there's still work to be done to meet their own lofty standards, identifying areas like strategy, rotation, and shot execution as needing immediate attention.
Thinaah admitted the pair were not fully satisfied with their performance, saying, "We're not 100 per cent happy with it," Thinaah said. She added that there are still areas to refine and that the duo will review things together with their coaches before returning stronger in the next match.
Pearly, meanwhile, downplayed concerns about their two-month break, insisting that their preparation in training had been sufficient ahead of the tournament. Both players agreed that strong on-court communication helped them stay composed during difficult stretches.
"There were some shots that were still a bit rusty and I think the execution of shots can be even better," Thinaah said. "But thankfully, we have good communication on court that really helped us go through some of the crucial points."
Looking ahead, Pearly-Thinaah will face either Thailand’s Benyapa-Nuntakarn Aimsard or Canada’s Jackie Dent-Crystal Lai in the second round.
