As MotoGP prepares for one of its biggest technical changes in recent years, Pirelli is entering a critical stage of development ahead of becoming the championship's exclusive tyre supplier in 2027. With the first major rider tests approaching, the Italian manufacturer is intensifying efforts to create tyres capable of meeting the demands of MotoGP's next generation of 850cc machines.
Pirelli has been supplying prototype tyres to manufacturers since October 2025, allowing teams to begin early evaluation and development work. According to Pirelli motorcycle racing director Giorgio Barbier, two batches of tyres have already been delivered, with each version representing a step forward in the development process.
The company plans to use three official test sessions at Brno, Spielberg and Valencia this year to refine the final product. The objective is to determine the most suitable tyre structures for the new motorcycles while also building a range of compounds that can perform effectively across the variety of circuits on the MotoGP calendar.
The upcoming tests will also mark the first opportunity for several established MotoGP stars to provide direct feedback on the new tyres. Riders currently confirmed for 2027 who are expected to participate include Aprilia's Marco Bezzecchi, Yamaha newcomer Toprak Razgatlioglu, Honda rider Diogo Moreira, and Ducati duo Fermin Aldeguer and Marc Marquez.
While manufacturers have already conducted private testing programmes with their test riders, Pirelli views feedback from full-time race riders as particularly valuable. Their ability to evaluate performance at the highest level will help shape the direction of future tyre development.
Early testing has already generated encouraging signs. Barbier revealed that manufacturers used all 70 tyres supplied in the first batch, indicating that teams were able to integrate the new rubber into their ongoing motorcycle development programmes.
Pirelli's initial focus is not purely on outright performance. Instead, the company is prioritising rider confidence, strong grip levels and fast warm-up characteristics. Establishing a predictable and trustworthy tyre from the opening laps is considered a key foundation before pursuing further gains in speed and performance.
Despite the attention surrounding six-time MotoGP champion Marc Marquez, Pirelli insists that development will not be tailored to suit any individual rider.
Barbier dismissed suggestions that the company could create a tyre specifically suited to Marquez's riding style, stressing that Pirelli's goal is to develop a product that benefits the entire grid. He explained that feedback from all riders capable of providing detailed technical input will be considered throughout the process.

The early testing programme could also create a competitive advantage for riders who gain experience with the new tyres before the 2027 season begins. Familiarity with Pirelli's characteristics may help riders and teams better align motorcycle development with the new rubber.
This could prove especially important for riders with previous Pirelli experience. World Superbike frontrunner Nicolo Bulega, for example, would arrive in MotoGP with extensive knowledge of the tyres should he secure a premier-class seat in the future.
One challenge facing Pirelli, however, is the increasingly active rider market. Frequent changes between teams and manufacturers could result in some riders arriving at key tests with little or no prior experience on the new tyres.
Barbier admitted this remains a concern, particularly ahead of the Valencia test later this year. Riders switching teams may have less time to adapt, potentially putting them at a disadvantage as MotoGP enters a new era in 2027.
With development accelerating and feedback from top riders soon to arrive, the next few months will be crucial in determining whether Pirelli can successfully deliver the tyres that will define MotoGP's future.
