Maja Chwalinska's dream run at Roland Garros continued on Thursday as the world No. 114 became the first women's qualifier to reach a French Open final in the Open Era, moving within one win of an extraordinary Grand Slam triumph.

Maja Chwalinska's remarkable journey at Roland Garros has reached historic heights after the Polish qualifier secured a place in her first Grand Slam final.

The world No. 114 defeated 25th seed Diana Shnaider 7-6 (4), 6-4 in Thursday's semifinal to become just the second women's qualifier in the Open Era to reach a Grand Slam final and the first to achieve the feat at the French Open.

Chwalinska arrived in Paris with little expectation after having to battle through the qualifying rounds just to earn a place in the main draw. Less than two weeks later, the 24-year-old finds herself one match away from completing one of the most unlikely title runs in recent tennis history.

The semifinal against Shnaider proved to be her toughest challenge yet.

Both left-handers produced a high-quality contest that lasted more than two hours, with momentum swinging throughout the match. Chwalinska showed impressive composure in the opening set, recovering after surrendering an early break advantage and saving two break points at 5-5 before forcing a tiebreak.

She then took control of the breaker, winning the final five points to move ahead.

The second set remained closely contested as the pair exchanged breaks early on. Chwalinska eventually created the decisive opening with another strong return game before confidently serving out the match.

Her aggressive but disciplined approach proved crucial. Chwalinska struck 32 winners while committing just 17 unforced errors, significantly cleaner than Shnaider's tally of 33 winners and 36 unforced errors.

After the match, the Pole admitted she was proud of how she handled both the physical and mental demands of the occasion.

The achievement is particularly remarkable given her limited experience at Grand Slam level. Before this year's French Open, Chwalinska had only appeared in the main draw of two major tournaments, Wimbledon in 2022 and the Australian Open in 2025.

Now she stands on the verge of tennis history.

Awaiting her in Saturday's final is rising star Mirra Andreeva. Victory would make Chwalinska one of the few qualifiers ever to win a Grand Slam singles title and complete one of the most memorable runs the sport has seen.

Regardless of the outcome, the tournament has already transformed her career. Chwalinska is guaranteed to break into the world's top 25 when the new rankings are released, while a title victory could propel her all the way to world No. 14.

From the qualifying courts to the championship match, Chwalinska has emerged as the surprise story of Roland Garros 2026 and now stands just one win away from an extraordinary sporting achievement.
