Fabio Quartararo endured a challenging return to action at Circuito de Jerez Ángel Nieto, as Yamaha’s ongoing struggles were once again exposed.
After a four-week break, expectations were modest, but the reality proved even more concerning. Quartararo could only manage 17th place in practice, underlining the lack of competitiveness of the current Yamaha YZR-M1.
His fastest lap was over one second slower than his own pole time at the same circuit last year. While overall grid performance has improved, the gap remains significant. Álex Márquez set a benchmark lap that was around a second quicker than Quartararo’s best effort, further highlighting the growing deficit.
Quartararo did not hide his frustration, admitting the situation is beginning to take a mental toll.

“You just don’t want to try your best,” he said, reflecting the difficulty of pushing with a package that cannot match its rivals.
He also dismissed any suggestion that track conditions played a role, noting that Jerez offered better grip and faster lap times this year. Márquez’s leading time reinforced that the circuit itself was not the limiting factor.
Instead, Quartararo pointed to deeper technical issues within the bike. He explained that the problems go beyond engine performance, stressing that the machine lacks key fundamentals needed to compete.
“We need a bike that turns, that stops, that has a feeling on the front, that has grip,” he said, reiterating concerns he has raised for months.
Despite consistently highlighting these shortcomings, meaningful progress has yet to be seen on track. The situation leaves Quartararo increasingly frustrated as he continues to fight with a package that falls short of MotoGP’s front-runners.
With no immediate solution in sight, Yamaha faces mounting pressure to respond, while Quartararo is left trying to extract results under difficult circumstances.
