Young Spaniard Rafa Jodar says his Madrid clash with world No. 1 Jannik Sinner helped him grow, as he carries those lessons into his breakthrough run at the Rome Masters.

Rising Spanish talent Rafa Jodar has reflected on his recent defeat to world No. 1 Jannik Sinner at the Madrid Open, saying the experience proved to be a valuable step in his development during a strong clay-court season.

The 19-year-old faced Sinner in the quarter-finals in Madrid after a breakthrough run that included wins over higher-ranked opponents and his first Masters 1000 quarter-final appearance. Although he ultimately fell short, Jodar pushed the top seed in parts of the match and gained confidence from competing at that level.

Following that defeat, Jodar has continued his progress at the Rome Masters, where he picked up his first title and has maintained strong form on clay.

“I learned a lot,” Jodar said when revisiting the Madrid match. He described the experience of facing one of the best players in the world as both challenging and motivating, highlighting how small lapses in consistency can be costly at the highest level.

He added that while he was able to match Sinner at moments, the key lesson was sustaining that level over longer periods, especially against elite opposition.

“You need to be there for two or three hours without dropping the level,” he explained, noting that top players maintain intensity throughout an entire match and punish any dip in performance.

Jodar’s Madrid run marked a major breakthrough in his young career, helping him climb the rankings significantly and establish himself as one of the emerging names on the ATP Tour. His current progress in Rome suggests that the experience against Sinner may have played an important role in accelerating his development on clay.
