Malaysia's Ahmad Redzuan Zulwaqqarizal and Low Zi Yu are just one match away from capturing the mixed doubles title at the Asian Junior Championships after securing a hard-fought place in the final in Yatsushiro, Japan.
The Malaysian pair battled past Taiwan's Lin Sheng Ming and Sun Liang Ching 21-16, 23-25, 21-10 in a 53-minute semi-final to book a showdown with China's Zheng Wei Gang and Li Meng Han for the championship.
National junior coach Hazwan Jamaluddin believes his players have every chance of lifting the title but stressed that they must produce another disciplined performance against a traditionally strong Chinese pairing.
Reflecting on the semi-final, Hazwan praised the duo's ability to recover after letting the second game slip away.
"We controlled the pace well in the opening game. In the second, we allowed our opponents to dictate the rallies, but the players responded well in the deciding game by taking control again. That was the key to the win," he said.
China's Zheng and Li booked their place in the final with a convincing 21-12, 21-15 victory over compatriots Sun Qi Rui and Yang Dan, underlining the challenge awaiting the Malaysians.
China has long dominated the mixed doubles event at the Asian Junior Championships, winning 14 of the tournament's previous 25 titles. Hazwan acknowledged that history but insisted his players are focused on the task ahead.
"We know China's strength in this event. They consistently produce top players, so we have to be fully prepared regardless of their ranking or seeding," he said.
Victory in the final would end Malaysia's lengthy wait for the Asian Junior mixed doubles crown. The country's last title came in 2007 through Tan Wee Kiong and Woon Khe Wei, making this year's final an opportunity to end an 18-year drought.
The match also carries extra significance for Low Zi Yu. The talented youngster has finished as runner-up at the last two World Junior Championships with different partners and now has another chance to claim a major international junior title.
A win would not only mark a breakthrough for Redzuan and Zi Yu but also provide another encouraging sign for Malaysia's next generation of badminton talent as they continue their rise on the international stage.
