Malaysia's Low Zi Yu will enter the Asian Junior Championships in Japan with growing confidence and ambitious goals after a breakthrough year competing against senior international opposition.
The 16-year-old has emerged as one of the country's most promising young badminton talents and will be among Malaysia's key hopes when the tournament takes place in Yatsushiro from June 26 to July 5.
Unlike many of her junior rivals, Zi Yu arrives with significant experience gained on the BWF World Tour. Over the past six months, she has regularly tested herself against higher-ranked and more experienced opponents, a challenge she believes has accelerated her development both technically and mentally.
One of the highlights of her season came at the Australian Open, where she partnered Noraqilah Maisarah Ramdan to reach the quarter-finals. The pair also recorded an impressive victory over Japanese top-10 duo Kie Nakanishi and Rin Iwanaga, helping them climb to a career-high world ranking of No. 70.

The success has strengthened Zi Yu's belief heading into the continental junior championships, where she hopes to translate her senior-level experience into podium finishes.
After competing in the mixed team event, Zi Yu will focus on her individual campaigns in mixed doubles and girls' doubles. Despite entering the tournament with different partners, her ambitions remain unchanged.
In mixed doubles, she will reunite with Ahmad Redzuan, a partnership that has already delivered encouraging results this year. The duo reached the semi-finals of the Dutch Junior International before finishing runners-up at the German Junior, establishing themselves as one of Malaysia's strongest medal prospects.
The girls' doubles competition presents a new challenge. With former partner Noraqilah now focused on senior tournaments, Zi Yu will team up with Genevie Lim in a major championship for the first time.
Although the partnership is still developing, Zi Yu is optimistic about their prospects. She believes their training sessions have shown positive signs and hopes that growing chemistry on court can help them mount a serious challenge for the title.
The upcoming tournament also offers an opportunity for redemption. During her debut appearance at last year's Asian Junior Championships, Zi Yu exited early and was unable to make a significant impact.
This time, expectations are much higher. Armed with valuable senior tour experience and improved confidence, she arrives in Japan as one of Malaysia's brightest hopes and a genuine contender for medals.
If her recent progress is any indication, Zi Yu could be well positioned to turn her rapid rise into a breakthrough performance on the junior stage.
