The race for the final places at the Nitto ATP Finals is beginning to take shape, with Andrey Rublev making an important move while Daniil Medvedev strengthened his position inside the qualification zone.
Recent results in Asia have reshaped the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin, with several contenders picking up valuable points as the season enters its final stages.
Rublev made the biggest move among the leading outsiders after reaching the final of the AITO Hangzhou Open. The run lifted him one place to 20th in the Live Race, where he now has 1,975 points.
The Russian also reached a significant career milestone in Hangzhou, recording his 400th tour-level victory during his semi-final win. His run eventually ended against close friend Medvedev in the final, but the points gained in China have kept his Turin hopes alive.
Rublev is currently 1,045 points behind eighth-placed Medvedev, who occupies the final qualifying position.
With the China Open in Beijing and the Rolex Shanghai Masters coming up, Rublev has two major opportunities to close the gap. Strong runs at either tournament could significantly change the picture, particularly with the final weeks of the season approaching.
Medvedev, meanwhile, has given himself a stronger cushion after winning the Hangzhou title. The 2020 Nitto ATP Finals champion claimed his third ATP Tour trophy of the season and retained eighth place in the Live Race.
His latest title has moved him 511 points clear of ninth-placed Rafael Jodar, giving him some breathing room in the battle for the final spot.
While Medvedev has strengthened his position, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina has also made a notable jump after another breakthrough week.
The Spaniard won the Chengdu Open for his second ATP 250 title of the season, defeating Hubert Hurkacz in the final. The victory was particularly significant after Davidovich Fokina had previously lost his first five ATP Tour finals.
His Chengdu success lifted him four places to 28th in the Live Race, with 1,450 points.
That leaves Davidovich Fokina with a much larger gap to overcome than Rublev, but the Spaniard's recent form gives him an opportunity to make further progress. The ATP 500 event in Tokyo and the Masters 1000 tournament in Shanghai are among the next chances for him to collect significant points.
For Rublev, however, the route is more straightforward. Sitting just over 1,000 points outside the top eight, he has a realistic target in front of him, but will need deep runs in the remaining major events to put pressure on the players above him.
With the Nitto ATP Finals qualification places still up for grabs, the upcoming Asian swing could prove decisive. Every victory now carries added importance as the contenders fight to finish inside the top eight and earn a place in Turin.
