Malaysia’s mixed doubles hopes suffered a major blow at the All England Open Badminton Championships as world champions Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei were surprisingly knocked out in the first round by unseeded Danish pair Rasmus Espersen and Amalie Kudsk. The 62-minute match ended 18-21, 21-12, 25-23 in a dramatic finish that saw the Malaysians nearly recover from a 19-14 deficit in the deciding game, only to fall short at match point.
Post-match, Chen Tang Jie acknowledged lapses in on-court coordination. He said their rotation and communication needed improvement, leaving gaps that opponents exploited. Toh Ee Wei added that their tendency to play too many lifts allowed the Danes to dictate rallies, limiting Malaysia’s aggressive options.
Service errors also played a critical role. Ee Wei admitted that repeated faults at key moments affected her confidence, and the pressure to avoid mistakes led to further errors. In tournaments like the All England, these errors not only cost points but also disrupted momentum in tight matches.
The defeat continues a worrying pattern, with the pair also exiting in the first round last year. Despite their world champion status, consistency in high-pressure events remains a challenge. Coaching staff will need to address these tactical and mental issues to prevent future early exits.
Other Malaysian mixed doubles teams also fell early. Jimmy Wong and Lai Pei Jing lost to Taiwan’s Ye Hong Wei and Nicole Gonzales Chan, while Hoo Pang Ron and Cheng Su Yin were defeated by India’s Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto.
With multiple pairs out, Malaysia now pins its hopes on Goh Soon Huat and Shevon Lai to salvage national pride in the mixed doubles category. Their upcoming matches will carry the weight of expectations after a string of early upsets.
