Southampton’s hopes of securing promotion back to the Premier League have been shattered after the English Football League ruled the club out of the Championship play-off final following a major disciplinary investigation.
The decision comes after an Independent Disciplinary Commission found Southampton guilty of multiple breaches of EFL regulations, including the unauthorized filming of opposition training sessions during the 2025-26 season.
The Saints had originally booked their place in the Wembley final after defeating Middlesbrough in the play-off semi-finals. However, the EFL has now overturned that outcome, removing Southampton from the competition and reinstating Middlesbrough in their place.
In addition to expulsion from the play-offs, Southampton were also handed a four-point deduction for the 2026-27 Championship season along with an official reprimand.
According to the findings, the club committed further breaches involving matches against Oxford United, Ipswich Town, and Middlesbrough, raising serious concerns over sporting conduct and competitive integrity.
The EFL confirmed that Middlesbrough will now face Hull City in the Championship play-off final at Wembley Stadium on May 23, with a place in the Premier League and a financial boost reportedly worth around £135 million at stake.
Middlesbrough quickly welcomed the ruling, stating that the decision sends an important message regarding fairness and integrity within English football.
The dramatic development has sparked widespread debate across the football world, with many describing it as one of the most significant disciplinary decisions in recent EFL history.
Southampton still retain the right to appeal the verdict, and discussions are ongoing ahead of the scheduled final. The EFL stated that further updates will be provided if necessary as preparations continue for Wembley.
