Iga Swiatek has moved past her difficult experience at the Madrid Open and is refocusing on her preparation as she continues working with new coach Francisco Roig.
The world No. 3 endured a challenging week in Madrid after suffering from illness during the tournament, which ultimately forced her to retire from her third-round match against Ann Li. Swiatek later described the period as extremely difficult physically, saying she had no energy during the match and needed time to recover properly before returning to competition.
After taking a few days to recover, she has now resumed training and confirmed she is back to full fitness as she prepares for the next stage of the clay season in Rome.
Despite the setback, Swiatek remains positive about the progress she is making under Roig, who joined her team recently following her split with former coach Wim Fissette. The partnership is still in its early phase, but Swiatek says she is already seeing improvements in her training structure and match preparation.
A key focus has been refining her game style and building more consistency in her patterns. Swiatek explained that she is experimenting with different tactical ideas during practice sessions, even if it takes time to fully implement them in matches.
She also highlighted that the biggest benefit so far is the clarity in her training process, saying she feels her sessions now have a clear purpose and direction. While adjustments are still ongoing, she believes the process is moving in the right direction.
Swiatek is now looking ahead to Rome, where she will aim to build momentum again as she continues her preparation for the rest of the clay-court season.
