Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani delivered a memorable performance to claim the Indonesia Open men's doubles title, ending an 18-year drought for Malaysia in one of badminton's most prestigious tournaments.
The world No. 8 pair battled back from a game down to defeat Indonesia's Raymond Indra and Nikolaus Joaquin 13-21, 21-18, 21-10 in the final at Istora Senayan, securing a historic victory after 49 minutes of action.
Their triumph makes them the first Malaysian men's doubles pair to win the Indonesia Open since Zakry Latif and Fairuzizuan Tazari lifted the trophy in 2008.
The final began in difficult fashion for the Malaysians as the home favourites took control of the opening game. However, Sze Fei and Izzuddin responded impressively, raising their intensity and improving their consistency to edge a closely contested second game.
With momentum firmly on their side, the Malaysians dominated the deciding game, overwhelming their opponents with aggressive attacking play and strong court coverage to seal the title in convincing fashion.
The victory continues an impressive rise for the pair, who have established themselves as one of the most dangerous combinations on the international circuit. It also marks their second Super 1000 title, following their breakthrough success at the China Open.
Adding further significance to the achievement, the Indonesia Open victory was their second triumph over Raymond and Nikolaus this year after also defeating the Indonesian pair in the Indonesia Masters final earlier in the season.
The achievement drew praise from across Malaysia, with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim congratulating the duo for their outstanding performance and describing the result as another proud moment for Malaysian sport.
Meanwhile, Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz highlighted the importance of ending the country's long wait for the men's doubles crown, calling the accomplishment a significant milestone for Malaysian badminton.
The victory not only adds another prestigious title to Sze Fei and Izzuddin's growing collection but also reinforces their credentials as genuine contenders at the sport's biggest tournaments.
After ending an 18-year wait in Jakarta, the Malaysian pair will now look to build on their momentum as they continue their pursuit of further success on the world stage.
