Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani were denied a fairytale finish at the Malaysia Masters after Denmark’s Daniel Lundgaard and Mads Vestergaard produced a clinical display to capture their first World Tour title.

Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani suffered more heartbreak at the Malaysia Masters after finishing runners-up for the second time in their careers.

The Malaysian independent pair were beaten 21-16, 21-17 by Denmark’s Daniel Lundgaard and Mads Vestergaard in a 42-minute men’s doubles final at the Unifi Arena in Kuala Lumpur.

It marked another painful ending for Sze Fei and Izzuddin, who had also lost in the tournament final back in 2017. Despite strong support from the home crowd, the world No. 9 duo struggled to find answers against a confident Danish partnership that controlled the match from start to finish.

Lundgaard and Vestergaard, ranked No. 18 in the world, produced one of the biggest results of their careers to secure their maiden BWF World Tour title. Their aggressive attacking play and sharp defensive reading consistently disrupted the Malaysians’ rhythm.

The Danish pair had already impressed earlier in the tournament after eliminating fellow Malaysians Wan Arif Junaidi and Yap Roy King in the semi-finals before continuing their giant-killing run in the title match.

Sze Fei and Izzuddin entered the final with momentum following their impressive straight-games win over Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik in the semi-finals, but they were unable to reproduce the same intensity and precision on Sunday.

After the match, Izzuddin admitted the Danes applied pressure throughout the contest and managed to anticipate many of their tactical patterns early. He also acknowledged that the Malaysians reacted too slowly in adjusting their game plan during crucial stages.

Sze Fei pointed to service and receiving areas as key weaknesses that need improvement moving forward, especially against top international opponents.

The defeat comes at a demanding stage of the season, with the pair now preparing for a third consecutive tournament at this week’s Singapore Open. Their opening-round assignment will be another difficult challenge against Denmark’s experienced pair Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup Rasmussen, who currently hold a dominant head-to-head advantage.

Despite the disappointment, Sze Fei and Izzuddin’s run to the Malaysia Masters final continues to highlight their steady rise as one of Malaysia’s leading men’s doubles pairs this season.

Other winners at this year’s Malaysia Masters included China’s Li Shi Feng in the men’s singles, Thailand’s Ratchanok Intanon in the women’s singles, China’s Chen Fan Shu Tian and Luo Xu Min in the women’s doubles, and Gao Jia Xuan-Wei Ya Xin in the mixed doubles.
