Malaysia’s top independent men’s doubles pair, Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, produced a determined comeback performance to advance to the quarter-finals of the Thailand Open.
The world No. 9 duo defeated China’s Huang Di and Liu Yang in straight sets, winning 21-14, 24-22 in a match that tested both their composure and resilience.
After taking control comfortably in the opening game, the Malaysians faced a much tougher challenge in the second. Trailing 16-10 and later facing multiple game points, Sze Fei and Izzuddin fought back strongly to avoid a deciding set.
The pair saved four game points at 20-16 before surviving another at 22-21, eventually sealing the match 24-22 to complete an impressive recovery.
The result marks an important boost for the Malaysians, who have been searching for greater consistency this season. They started the year strongly by winning the Indonesia Masters in January but struggled to maintain momentum in several major tournaments afterward, including early exits at the All England and Asian Championships.
Their latest run in Bangkok also matches their previous best performances at the Thailand Open, where they reached the quarter-finals in 2020 and 2022.
More importantly, the victory highlighted the pair’s growing mental strength under pressure, an area that could prove crucial as they continue competing against the world’s top combinations.
With confidence building again, Sze Fei and Izzuddin now carry Malaysia’s hopes deeper into the tournament as they look to rediscover the form that made them one of the standout pairs earlier this season.
