USA's Unstoppable March to Glory

The inaugural MLP Nations Cup was poised to crown a champion, and frankly, there was only one team everyone had their eyes on: Team USA. They didn't just meet expectations; they shattered them, solidifying their status as a global pickleball powerhouse with a commanding performance that left no doubt about their supremacy. This truly was a tournament for the record books, setting a high bar for future international competitions.

Tournament Highlights: Team USA's Dominance & Asia's Rise

  • Team USA lived up to their favorite billing, securing the inaugural MLP Nations Cup title with formidable play.
  • The American squad, featuring stars like Ben Johns and Anna Bright, won four of their five total victories in regulation, showcasing unparalleled consistency.
  • Team Asia Domestic delivered a stunning performance, pushing Team USA to an intense DreamBreaker and reaching the semifinals.
  • Team Asia International faced a challenging tournament, finishing winless, highlighting the critical importance of instant team chemistry in the fast-paced pickleball format.

USA's Unstoppable March to Glory

With an absolutely stacked roster featuring names like Ben Johns, CJ Klinger, Will Howells, Anna Bright, Tyra Black, and Kate Fahey, Team USA was the undeniable favorite heading into the weekend. Their journey to the championship was a clinic in high-level pickleball.

They confidently beat Team Europe East 3-1 in the semifinals before cruising past Team Latin America with an emphatic 3-0 sweep in the final. This dominant display showcased not just individual talent, but incredible team synergy built in record time.

The Power of Team Cohesion

Team Captain Johnny Goldberg highlighted the incredible cohesion. "They were all really proud playing for their country," Goldberg stated. "Coming into it I knew they were all great players, but we really got them to come together as a team in 24 hours. They bought into everything and I felt like we were playing our best pickleball in that last match."

For Anna Bright, who had just claimed the Women's Doubles title at the Hang Seng Bank Hong Kong Open a week prior, the experience was profoundly impactful. "It feels absolutely incredible," Bright shared. "All the USA chants, all the support, really meant so much and helped us feel like we were playing for more than just ourselves. I knew coming into this event that it would be a good time, but it was way more fun than I thought it would be."

Asia Domestic: A Rising Force Defies Expectations

While Team USA stole the headlines, the most compelling narrative for Asian fans belonged to Team Asia Domestic. This squad emerged as a true dark horse, defying expectations with a spirited run through Pool A.

They finished an impressive second with a 2-1 record, kicking things off with a solid 3-1 win over Europe West and following it up with a crushing 3-0 shutout of Canada. Their early performances signaled a team ready to compete.

Pushing the Champions to the Brink

The highlight of their tournament, undoubtedly, was their pool stage clash against eventual champions Team USA. Asia Domestic pushed the Americans to their absolute limit in a thrilling encounter.

After losing Women's Doubles 13-11, Asia Domestic roared back to claim Men's Doubles 11-6 and Mixed 1 14-12. Though Team USA leveled the score with an 11-4 win in Mixed 2, forcing the tournament's first-ever DreamBreaker, Asia Domestic only narrowly lost 21-18, resulting in a valiant 3-2 defeat. This performance proved they belong on the world stage.

Their impressive showing earned them a semifinal berth, where their inspiring run ultimately ended against a strong Latin America side, losing 3-1. Yet, taking the tournament's best team to the wire is a testament to their skill and determination – a clear sign of rising talent.

Asia International's Tough Learning Curve

On the other side of the Asian coin, Team Asia International faced a much tougher weekend. Featuring recognizable names like Rika Fujiwara, Lingwei Kong, Jimmy Liong, Tama Shimabukuro, Jack Wong Hong-kit, and Macy Ybañez, the team struggled to find their rhythm.

They finished Pool B winless at 0-3, dropping matches 3-0 to Latin America and 3-1 to both Australia and Europe East. This resulted in a disheartening -7 game differential.

It was a disappointing outing for a team with such individual talent. However, it offered a stark lesson: in team formats, chemistry and synergy built within hours are just as crucial as individual skill. This experience will undoubtedly serve as a valuable learning opportunity for future competitions.

What's Next for Global Pickleball?

The inaugural MLP Nations Cup featured eight teams and 48 elite players representing key global regions: Asia Domestic, Europe West, Canada, USA, Asia International, Australia, Europe East, and Latin America. From this competitive field, USA and Asia Domestic from Pool A, alongside Europe East and Latin America from Pool B, advanced to the knockout stages.

Beyond being a thrilling competition, the event served as the official kickoff for the 2026 Pickleball World Championships. This monumental 10-day event, running from October 30 to November 8 at Brookhaven Country Club, is poised to surpass last year's record-breaking attendance, participation, and viewership.

For Asian pickleball fans, the weekend delivered a mixed bag: a valiant, inspiring run from Asia Domestic, a challenging but educational experience for Asia International, and a clear signal that the gap is closing as global pickleball continues its meteoric rise.
