Valentin Vacherot’s Shanghai Masters title may have been the headline, but the Monegasque says his breakthrough win over Alexander Bublik was the moment he realised he belonged among the ATP Tour’s best.

Valentin Vacherot's remarkable rise began with a match that, at the time, looked like just another second-round contest.

At the 2025 Rolex Shanghai Masters, the Monegasque arrived ranked No. 204 in the world and had come through qualifying. By the end of the tournament, he was an ATP Masters 1000 champion after beating his cousin Arthur Rinderknech in one of the most unexpected finals in recent tennis history.

But Vacherot believes the moment that truly changed his career came much earlier, when he faced then-World No. 17 Alexander Bublik.

Vacherot recovered from losing the opening set to beat Bublik 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. More than simply advancing to the third round, the victory gave him a new belief in what he could achieve.

"The one match that changed everything was beating Bublik in the Shanghai second round," Vacherot said.

It was the first time in his career that he had defeated a player ranked so close to the world's top 15. Rather than treating the result as an isolated upset, Vacherot took it as proof that he could compete at that level consistently.

His mindset changed almost immediately.

Instead of thinking about how impressive the victory was, Vacherot began viewing that level of performance as the standard he needed to maintain.

"This is the way I have to play now," he recalled thinking after the match.

The experience also gave him a first real taste of the attention that comes with competing deep in a major ATP tournament. After defeating Bublik, it took Vacherot around 25 minutes to make his way back to the locker room because of the crowd surrounding him.

For a player who had spent much of his career outside the spotlight, the experience was another indication that he had entered a different level of professional tennis.

The results that followed only strengthened that belief.

Vacherot defeated Tomas Machac and Tallon Griekspoor before producing another major upset against then-World No. 11 Holger Rune. He then stunned Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals to set up an extraordinary final against Rinderknech.

The all-French connection made the championship match particularly unusual, with Vacherot and his cousin meeting on one of the biggest stages of their careers. Vacherot eventually prevailed 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 to complete his stunning run.

The Shanghai title transformed his career almost overnight.

Vacherot climbed from No. 204 to No. 40 in the rankings after the tournament and later reached a career-high No. 30. The ranking boost also gave him regular access to the main draws of major tournaments, removing one of the biggest obstacles faced by players outside the top 100.

He quickly showed that Shanghai was not a one-off.

Vacherot reached the quarter-finals at the 2025 Paris Masters before making the third round of the 2026 Australian Open and reaching the last eight in Acapulco.

His biggest achievement of 2026 came on home soil at the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters, where he became the first Monegasque player to reach the semi-finals of the tournament. His run ended against Carlos Alcaraz, but the result pushed him into the world's top 20.

Through it all, Vacherot has continued to credit a simple reason for his progress: his enjoyment of tennis.

He has said that he loves playing the sport so much that his coaches sometimes have to convince him to leave the court.

That passion, combined with the belief he gained in Shanghai, has helped reshape Vacherot's career. The Masters 1000 title will always be the defining achievement of that remarkable week, but for Vacherot, the real breakthrough came when he defeated Bublik and realised he could belong at the highest level.

Shanghai gave him the trophy. Beating Bublik gave him the belief.
