Toh Ee Wei has taken the first step in her recovery from a serious knee injury, travelling to Melbourne, Australia, to seek specialist advice on a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) sustained during last month's Singapore Open.
The injury is a significant setback for the Malaysian mixed doubles player and raises uncertainty over her participation at the World Championships in New Delhi, scheduled for August 17 to 23, where she had hoped to defend the title she won alongside Chen Tang Jie.
For Ee Wei, the trip to Australia marks the beginning of what is expected to be a lengthy rehabilitation process. It is another challenge in a career that has already seen her overcome major health obstacles, including acute sinusitis in 2018 and bone tuberculosis in 2020.
Sharing her thoughts on social media before her departure, Ee Wei reflected on the difference between travelling for competition and travelling for recovery. She described the journey as both a mission and a responsibility, highlighting her determination to return stronger despite the uncertainty surrounding her recovery timeline.
The 24-year-old also spoke about the lessons sport has taught her beyond victories and defeats. She said setbacks, failures, and difficult moments are part of every athlete's journey, and true perseverance comes from continuing to move forward even when the path ahead is unclear.
Her message offered a glimpse into the mental battle that often accompanies serious injuries. While the physical recovery will take time, Ee Wei remains focused on doing everything possible to return to the court step by step.
As she begins rehabilitation, the badminton community will be closely following her progress. Although her immediate future remains uncertain, Ee Wei's determination and resilience have already been tested before, and she now faces another challenge with the same fighting spirit that has defined her career.
