Chaos at the London Stadium
West Ham United thought they had salvaged a dramatic 1-1 draw in the closing stages of the match, believing they had earned a crucial point in their battle to avoid relegation. Following a scramble inside the box, the ball was forced home by Callum Wilson, triggering jubilant scenes among the home supporters.
However, celebrations were abruptly halted after VAR stepped in to examine a possible handball during the build-up. After a lengthy review at the monitor, referee Chris Kavanagh overturned the goal, leaving West Ham frustrated. Instead, Arsenal FC held on for a 1-0 victory thanks to a strike from Leandro Trossard, extending their lead at the top of the Premier League to five points over Manchester City.
The Premier League later clarified the ruling in an official post on X, stating: "After VAR review, the referee overturned the original decision of goal to West Ham United. Referee announcement: 'After review, West Ham number 19 commits a foul on the goalkeeper. Final decision is direct free kick'."
Bowen’s plea for refereeing consistency
Jarrod Bowen was heavily involved in the incident and showed his frustration at full-time, first confronting officials on the pitch before voicing his concerns in the media.
The England international criticised the lack of consistency in refereeing decisions, particularly around subjective VAR calls. Speaking to BBC Sport, Bowen said: "A real blow. We thought we'd done so well to get back in it and had it taken away from us," fumed the West Ham star. "When you look at the screen for five minutes you'll find something - a lot of grappling and a lot of holding. I'm sure if you look long enough you'll find something. Do I think it's the right decision? No. Frustration. Where's the consistency? As a fan you don't want to celebrate a goal and then wait eight minutes and it's taken off you.
"Corners are physical. The Premier League is physical. That's why everyone loves it. You have to expect contact at corners. If you give that you have to give all the holding calls in the world and that's not the way people want the game to go down. I don't want to sound bitter but last week we had one with Tomas Soucek held at Brentford and we didn't get a penalty. But then you can't give one like that today."
Nuno Santo slams VAR process
Nuno Espírito Santo also expressed frustration, highlighting the disruption caused by the extended VAR delay and its impact on his team’s momentum.
The West Ham manager felt his side were penalised during a spell when they were pressing strongly and had Arsenal FC under sustained pressure. "It is difficult to accept. We are talking about five minutes to make a decision," Nuno said to Sky Sports. "If it takes that long, it is not clear and obvious. We lose the momentum, we lose the emotion of the goal, and in the end, we lose the point because of a decision that nobody understands. We want respect and we want consistency for our work."
What comes next?
While West Ham were left disappointed by the late drama, the outcome proved a significant boost for Arsenal FC, who had earlier struggled to contain a late surge from the hosts, especially after losing Ben White to injury.
The win moves Arsenal to the brink of their first Premier League title in 22 years, with fixtures against already-relegated Burnley FC and Crystal Palace FC remaining. Meanwhile, West Ham sit 18th, one point behind 17th-placed Tottenham Hotspur with a game in hand, and will close their season against Newcastle United and Leeds United.
