For Wan Arif Junaidi and Yap Roy King, the Badminton Asia Championships (BAC) in Ningbo, China, represents more than just a tournament—it is a decisive audition for Malaysia’s Thomas Cup team. Ranked world No.16, the pair know their performances over the coming days could determine whether they earn a place in the national squad for the Thomas Cup Finals in Horsens, Denmark, from April 24 to May 3.
Malaysia has several strong men’s doubles pairs, including Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun, and Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, making the competition for Thomas Cup selection intense. Despite this, Arif and Roy King are determined to prove they belong among the country’s elite. “The Thomas Cup is a dream, but we must show it on court and trust the coaches to make the final decision,” Arif said.
Their campaign begins with a challenging rematch against Taiwan’s Lee Fang Chih-Lee Fang Jen, the pair who recently defeated them at the German Open. “We lost to them recently, so we want to make it right this time,” Arif said. The Malaysian duo has set their sights on reaching at least the semi-finals, a performance that would send a clear message about their ability to compete at the highest level.
If they overcome that first hurdle, an even tougher test awaits in a potential clash with Indonesia’s World No.5 pair Fajar Alfian and Shohibul Fikri, who hold a 1-0 head-to-head advantage from last year’s French Open quarter-finals. “We need to start beating top pairs consistently. That’s how we rebuild our confidence,” Arif said, reflecting their focus on long-term growth as a team.
Their journey has included both highs and lows. After winning the Macau Open last August, the pair gained a boost of confidence but struggled to maintain it. “When we won in Macau, our confidence improved, but it dropped again. It takes time to recover after losses,” Arif admitted. Heading into BAC, both players report feeling physically ready and injury-free, emphasizing the importance of staying healthy in high-stakes competition.
As the tournament approaches, all eyes are on Arif and Roy King. Their performance in Ningbo will not only influence their Thomas Cup prospects but could also mark a turning point in their careers, proving their resilience and capacity to compete against the best in Asia.
