Portuguese wildcard Tiago Torres produced the biggest upset of the Millennium Estoril Open by knocking out third seed Alejandro Tabilo, while Roman Andres Burruchaga extended his strong clay court form to reach the quarter-finals.

Portuguese wildcard Tiago Torres produced the biggest surprise of the Millennium Estoril Open on Wednesday (July 22), while Argentina's Roman Andres Burruchaga continued his impressive run by advancing to the quarter-finals.

World No. 427 Torres thrilled the home crowd with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over third seed Alejandro Tabilo in just his second ATP Tour main draw match.

The 22-year-old's breakthrough run has already boosted him 97 places to a projected career-high of World No. 330 in the live rankings. Torres will now face France's Hugo Gaston for a place in the semi-finals.

Burruchaga also booked his spot in the last eight after defeating Portugal's Nuno Borges 6-1, 4-6, 6-3. It was the Argentine's second straight three-set victory in Estoril and his third ATP Tour quarter-final appearance of the season.

The 24-year-old has enjoyed a breakthrough campaign on clay, with 12 of his 16 tour-level wins this year coming on the surface. After the match, Burruchaga credited his recent success to growing confidence in his game, particularly during the key moments of matches.

He will next meet fourth seed Alexander Blockx, who staged a remarkable comeback to defeat lucky loser Kyrian Jacquet 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(4).

Blockx saved two match points before completing the comeback to keep his title hopes alive and set up an intriguing quarter-final against the in-form Burruchaga.

Elsewhere, France's Hugo Gaston eased past compatriot Titouan Droguet 6-0, 6-3 to reach the eighth ATP Tour quarter-final of his career.

The victory also marks Gaston's first tour-level quarter-final of the season as he continues his push back towards the world's top players. He will take on home favourite Torres in one of the standout quarter-final matches.

With an inspired local wildcard, an in-form clay court specialist and several closely contested battles, the Estoril Open quarter-finals are shaping up to be an exciting stage of the tournament.
