Williams is the last F1 team to hit the track ahead of the 2026 season, having missed last week’s Barcelona test.

The Williams Racing saga for the 2026 Formula 1 season just shifted into high gear! After a tense wait and skipping the initial Barcelona test, the FW48 finally roared to life on the hallowed asphalt of Silverstone, igniting hopes for the iconic British squad.

Delayed Debut, Determined Drive

The journey to the track wasn't straightforward for Williams. While other teams were shaking down their 2026 prototypes in Barcelona, the Grove outfit announced its intention to skip, citing "delays in the FW48 programme." Team boss James Vowles revealed the immense pressure, noting the system was handling "about three times what it used to be" for the regulation overhaul. This highlighted the scale of change for the new chassis and power unit rules.

Instead of Barcelona, Williams leaned into technology, conducting a Virtual Track Test (VTT). This advanced simulation rig allows significant portions of the actual car to be tested digitally, replicating on-track conditions. Vowles confirmed its success, stating they "did the mileage that we wanted to do," setting the stage for the crucial Silverstone shakedown.

First Impressions from the Cockpit

The moment arrived at Silverstone, with both Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz taking the FW48 for its inaugural run. Though not in the official 2026 livery, the car's initial outing was met with cautious optimism.

James Vowles hailed it as a "milestone day," praising the team's relentless effort. He emphasized the importance of gathering early data and the "positive feedback" from the drivers, while also acknowledging "minor issues for us to clean up" before the serious testing begins.

Alex Albon shared his relief, stating, "That’s shakedown done... generally a fairly smooth day." He's eager to dive into the data, identifying areas for improvement ahead of Bahrain.

Carlos Sainz echoed the sentiment, calling it an "exciting, special day" for everyone involved. Despite the "typical winter day at Silverstone," the focus was on completing the shakedown plan and preparing for the more comprehensive runs in Bahrain.

The Long Haul to Melbourne

The Silverstone shakedown is merely the opening chapter for the FW48. The team will head to Bahrain for another promotional filming day on February 10th. This will be followed by two crucial three-day official pre-season tests (February 11-13 and February 18-20) at the same circuit.

Williams enters the 2026 season with renewed determination, looking to build on its impressive fifth-place finish in 2025 – the team’s best result since 2017. With the Melbourne opener set for March 6-8, every lap, virtual or real, counts. The push for performance has only just begun!
