Malaysian badminton star Lee Zii Jia will miss the first day of Thomas Cup preparations due to a minor ankle strain. The injury echoes the ankle and back issues that have affected him over the past year and comes amid a turbulent start to his season, with early exits in five of six tournaments.
National coaching director Kenneth Jonassen sought to reassure fans, describing the injury as minor and emphasizing that Zii Jia is expected to return to full fitness well before the Thomas Cup begins. "It’s a minor issue that he will overcome. My focus is on ensuring he recovers fully and returns to the court as soon as possible," Jonassen said. "There is still time, so there is no need to rush him. Players need to be fully fit to perform at 100 percent."
While attention remains on Zii Jia, the coaching team is also finalizing the Thomas Cup squad. Aidil Sholeh Ali Sadikin, who has been training with the national team for nearly two weeks, is being closely evaluated. Jonassen noted, "We have not made selections yet, but Aidil’s performance in training has been very promising. His condition is good, and he brings a high level of skill that we value."
The squad will soon enter a 10-day centralized training camp in Herning, Denmark. The camp aims to strengthen team cohesion, fine-tune tactics, and prepare players for key opponents. Jonassen highlighted the importance of unity: "One of the most important aspects of the camp is building cohesiveness. We want the team to operate as one, sharing energy and focus together."
As Malaysia gears up for the Thomas Cup, the team’s preparation strategy balances individual fitness, tactical readiness, and collective strength, all of which will be crucial in their pursuit of success.
