Alexander Zverev delivered an impressive performance at the Rolex Shanghai Masters, defeating Alex de Minaur in 78 minutes to book his place in the semi-finals for the first time since 2019.
The German secured a 6-4, 6-4 victory over the Australian at Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena on Thursday, using his powerful groundstrokes and reliable serving to control the match against one of the ATP Tour's quickest players.
Zverev admitted that the quarter-final presented a tougher challenge than his previous matches in Shanghai, but he was pleased with the improvement in his performance.
The top seed made the decisive breakthrough in the opening set at 2-2, converting his opportunity with a forehand winner. He then survived three break points in the following game to consolidate his advantage and move ahead 4-2.
De Minaur continued to apply pressure in the second set, forcing Zverev to save two break points before the German held serve at 3-3. Zverev responded immediately, breaking the Australian in the next game before closing out the match without dropping serve.
The German won 80 per cent of his first-serve points, converting 35 of 44, and struck 10 aces to underline his serving strength. His ability to find crucial points under pressure proved decisive against De Minaur, who struggled to turn his opportunities into a comeback.
The victory marked Zverev's third career semi-final appearance in Shanghai and strengthened his position as one of the leading contenders for the title.
His strong campaign comes during a season in which he has maintained an impressive win-loss record. With the year-end rankings race also a major talking point, Zverev has spoken about feeling more relaxed as he continues to pursue the highest honours in men's tennis.
However, his immediate focus will be on reaching the final, with Alejandro Davidovich Fokina standing between him and a place in the championship match.
The 25th-seeded Spaniard advanced to the semi-finals after Frenchman Arthur Gea retired from their quarter-final with a psoas injury while trailing 4-1 in the opening set.
Gea explained that continuing to play could have put the remainder of his season at risk, making his withdrawal a difficult but necessary decision.
Davidovich Fokina will therefore enter the semi-final after a shorter outing than expected. His earlier matches had been considerably more demanding, including deciding-set tie-break victories over Frances Tiafoe and Hubert Hurkacz.
The Spaniard's ability to recover could prove important against Zverev, who has looked increasingly comfortable as the tournament has progressed. Davidovich Fokina will need to disrupt the German's rhythm and take advantage of any opportunities on return if he hopes to reach the final.
With Zverev carrying strong momentum into the last four, the upcoming clash promises to be a test of both consistency and physical readiness as the Shanghai Masters approaches its conclusion.
