Bernard Tomic continued his impressive comeback by pulling off one of the biggest upsets of the week at the Mifel Tennis Open in Los Cabos, defeating top seed Karen Khachanov 6-2, 6-4 to reach the quarter-finals.
Competing as a lucky loser and ranked world No. 171, the Australian produced one of his best performances in recent years to eliminate the world No. 28 in just over an hour. Tomic was in control throughout the match, converting four of his eight break point opportunities while keeping Khachanov under constant pressure from the baseline.
The victory extends a remarkable run of form for the 32-year-old, who claimed the Lincoln Challenger title less than two weeks ago. It was his biggest trophy since 2018 and a result that prompted him to reconsider retirement after previously admitting he had been weighing up his future in the sport.
Tomic also impressed in the opening round, dropping just one game in his comfortable victory over Mexican qualifier Alex Hernandez before following it up with his biggest ATP Tour win in years against Khachanov.
His reward is a quarter-final meeting with fifth seed Cameron Norrie, who defeated Australia's James Duckworth 6-4, 6-4 to advance.
The match will mark the first ATP Tour meeting between Tomic and the former Los Cabos champion, with the resurgent Australian aiming to continue his unlikely run in Mexico.
