Rafael Jodar continued to underline his status as one of tennis' brightest young stars after defeating former world No. 4 Kei Nishikori 6-3, 6-2 to reach the quarter-finals of the DC Open in Washington.
The 19-year-old Spaniard produced a composed display against the experienced Japanese veteran, controlling the match from the baseline and preventing Nishikori from finding any rhythm. The victory marked another milestone in Jodar's rapid rise on the ATP Tour.
Jodar's tactical approach proved decisive as he consistently targeted Nishikori's forehand and dictated the rallies with aggressive groundstrokes. A gruelling 21-shot exchange early in the second set ended in the Spaniard's favour and helped him secure a crucial service break before he comfortably closed out the match.
Speaking after the win, Jodar praised his opponent while expressing satisfaction with his own performance.
"Kei is one of the best players of all time. It's a pleasure to play against a legend like him. I made some adjustments during the match and I'm really happy with how they worked," he said.
The victory adds to an impressive 2026 season for Jodar, who captured his maiden ATP Tour title in Marrakech in April and currently leads the PIF ATP Live Next Gen Race. Earlier in the tournament, he also defeated Arthur Fils to reach the last eight.
Jodar will next face fourth seed Lorenzo Musetti, who returned from a two-and-a-half-month injury layoff by defeating qualifier Aleksandar Vukic in three sets.
Elsewhere, American Alex Michelsen advanced with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) victory over France's Adrian Mannarino. The 20-year-old will now meet fellow American Taylor Fritz in the quarter-finals, carrying a 2-0 head-to-head advantage into the encounter.
