Cal Crutchlow continued his MotoGP comeback at Assen with a productive Friday at Assen, overcoming an interrupted opening session to build momentum as he prepares for Saturday's qualifying and Sprint race.
Standing in for the injured Johann Zarco at Castrol Honda LCR, the experienced Briton finished the day 23rd with a best lap of 1:33.215, focusing on regaining rhythm and collecting crucial data around one of MotoGP's most demanding circuits.
Highlights
- Cal Crutchlow finished Friday in 23rd with a best lap of 1:33.215
- An early technical issue in FP1 reduced his valuable track time
- Improved consistency during the afternoon session helped gather important setup data
- Hot conditions and Assen's fast direction changes presented the biggest physical challenge
Early technical issue interrupts Friday start
Crutchlow's day began with an unfortunate setback after a minor issue forced him to stop during the opening practice session, costing him valuable laps on a circuit that rewards confidence and rhythm. With limited running in FP1, the priority shifted from outright pace to rebuilding familiarity with both the bike and the famous Assen layout.
Afternoon session brings encouraging progress
The afternoon proved far more productive as Crutchlow completed a longer run of consistent laps, allowing the LCR Honda crew to collect valuable information ahead of the weekend's competitive sessions. Although his position on the timesheets remained 23rd, the focus was firmly on improving feeling with the bike and making gradual gains rather than chasing a single fast lap.
As a veteran rider returning to race action, every session provides another opportunity to refine setup and increase confidence, particularly while filling in for Zarco.
Heat and Assen's demanding layout test Crutchlow
Crutchlow admitted that the combination of high temperatures and Assen's flowing nature made Friday especially demanding.
"In FP1 we had a small issue and I had to stop, so we lost a bit of track time. I tried to stay consistent throughout the day, and overall I felt quite good. The heat makes it really tough, and this is a very physical track with so many changes of direction. That's where I struggled the most. We'll see tomorrow."
The rapid sequence of left-right transitions at Assen places significant physical demands on riders, particularly those returning after an extended absence from full-time competition.
Focus shifts to qualifying and the Sprint
With a full day of data now in hand, Crutchlow and the Castrol Honda LCR team will aim to make another step forward in Saturday's qualifying sessions before the Sprint race. While the final result on Friday does not reflect the team's primary objective, completing consistent laps after an interrupted morning gives the veteran rider a stronger platform to continue improving throughout the Dutch TT weekend.
